Coquitlam and Port Moody retain ownership of citysoup.ca, license products and services

COQUITLAM, BC – May 3, 2005 – The Smart Choices Society of British Columbia is pleased to announce that as part of its ongoing diversification strategy it has completed a technology transfer agreement with CS Networks Inc. for the citysoup.net suite of eCommunity products. The agreement ensures the long term sustainability of citysoup for the local communities of Port Moody and Coquitlam. It also includes annual payments plus royalty revenue for the Society based on citysoup.net sales. The Society retains the rights for marketing and promotion of citysoup products in British Columbia. Coquitlam and Port Moody retain ownership and control of their local citysoup.ca environment, which will continue to serve both cities, local community groups and businesses.

“The technology transfer to CS Networks is a natural progression now that Smart Choices has fulfilled its project mandate,” says Jennifer Wilkie, Chairperson of the Smart Choices Society. “This ensures the legacy of the citysoup eCommunity pilot project, and the cities continue to have the full use of all the tools and services, further expanding community connections using the Internet. It is the best of both worlds, enabling the cities to benefit over the long term from the future success of the services and infrastructure developed by the community.”

“Smart Choices was one of our Smart Community Program leading lights. We are pleased to see that this agreement promises the sustainability of such a worthwile community project,” says Penny Stratas, Regional Director, Industry Canada. “It gives citizens in Port Moody, Coquitlam and beyond access to the benefits we always envisioned information and communications technologies would deliver.”

As a result of the agreement, Coquitlam and Port Moody become customers of CS Networks, licensing the use of products and services. Working together, the two cities will supply local content and community events for the citysoup.ca web site. In addition to their city hall websites, the cities will continue to publish and support websites for the libraries, School District 43 and over 100 business and non-profits, via the citysoup.net technology. They will also operate Innovation Centre services and public access terminals. CS Networks will maintain the software and various components that power the cities'citysoup.net configuration.

“eCommunity initiatives are expanding and the citysoup.net eCommunity technology, content and process provide a perfect turnkey platform for any municipality,” says Rob Simpson, Vice President of Sales for CS Networks. “CS Networks is committed to bringing eCommunity products and services to communities in Canada and beyond through the citysoup.net enterprise solution.”

About Smart Choices
The Smart Choices Society of British Columbia was created to implement an eCommunity solution for the cities of Coquitlam and Port Moody under Industry Canada’s Connecting Canadians program. The project achieved its mandate with the launch of Canada’s first eCommunity – citysoup.ca – and the delivery of a new Innovation Centre, a network of free computer stations, a volunteer training network and a technology infrastructure that powers both cities, two library systems, a school network, local small businesses and community groups, GIS maps and eServices (including online payments and registrations).

About citysoup.net
Citysoup.net is an eCommunity enterprise solution that allows communities to bring together government, business and social information and services into one convenient, citizen-centric, locally-focused eCommunity. Citysoup.net products are built in logical component blocks like a city hall website, library website, calendar, directory etc. and each is "plug and play." Thus, cities and regions can affordably migrate to second generation website solutions that integrate with their existing data and at the same time deliver a citizen-centric focus and in-demand services like online registration, ePayment, GIS and more.
