1.1 Art at Council

Next week, Evelia Espinosa, a local Port Moody artist is hosting her 7th Annual Children’s Art Festival. Over 200 paintings will be on display in the Galleria from June 4th–14th. One of the participating artists is 14 year old Paola Cervantes. She is a French Immersion student at Riverside Secondary and has studied fine art since the age of 4. Paola studies under Evelia and has volunteered at Evelia’s Art Studio for the past six years. Paola is a very dedicated teenager whose interests include painting, drawing anime, ballet dancing and playing music.

Tonight’s Art at Council is a mixed media painting called You’re My Angel and is Paola’s most recent painting. She was inspired by a song about an angel that changes the attitudes of a loved one. Paola used an advance oil technique to obtain the effect of the shell shattering around the angel.

The Children’s Art Festival includes live art demonstrations on Saturday, June 8th from 2–5pm. And if you would like to see Paola in action she will be demonstrating drawing from 4–5pm that day

1.2 Historical Highlight

Former Mayor John Northey was to be in attendance to provide a retrospective of his time as Mayor and the changes that the City experienced during his term, but was not available.

Mayor Clay then introduced the 2013 Competitive Slam Poetry Team from Port Moody Secondary School who recently won the 2013 BC High School Championships. The Team was invited to the stage and Jacob G (founder and coach) introduced his team members, Ralph A., and Jean L. and acknowledged the fourth member Lindsay P. who was unable to attend this evening. He indicated that as a student founded and coached team, it was their first year in competition; hence they were thrilled to have won the championship. The following examples of their "art" were then presented:

• Ralph – "Poetry"

• Jean – "Chameleon"

• Jacob – "Fairy Tales"

• Team Slam (Jacob and Ralph) – "Beautiful Homeland".

It was noted that Jacob will be competing at the National level in Vancouver this summer and that the talented group will be appearing at the Coquitlam Library and is pleased to consider other appearances upon request.

2. Public Input

J. Miller, Port Moody, spoke in support of the proposed strata conversion at 2638 St. George Street and commented how pleased he was to see heritage properties being preserved. He also expressed support for the Heritage Commission project for Vinyl Wraps on Utility Boxes.

David Spence, Port Moody, encouraged Council’s support of the stratification on St. George Street as it will enhance the neighbourhood and may encourage others to consider retention of heritage properties. He also urged Council to support the request for proclamation of Honey Bee Day.

Peter Dasniers spoke regarding the potential future Sky Train Station between Elgin and Queen Streets and asked if staff could confirm that the grade had been adjusted to accommodate the location where that station is shown on maps as potentially being located. He added that if the station cannot be constructed at the location shown in the OCP, it should not be shown in the OCP at that location. He noted that development plans in that area depend upon that station so it is important to know that the grade will accommodate the station.

10 Public Input

Fred Soofi, Port Moody, requested clarification from the Mayor regarding his comments on the strata conversion of 2638 St. George Street. Mr. Soofi confirmed that while he initially experienced opposition from the neighbourhood, it was apparent that people had misunderstood his intent and now he has received much support and would encourage Council to find ways to make heritage preservation more viable.

David Spence, Port Moody, advised that, as Col. Moody, he had attended the Public Works Day display as well as the Hyack Parade in New Westminster. He will be attending at Government House, Victoria, on June 2nd in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne, and then will participate in the June 22nd parade in Port Moody
