The Township of Langley has won a BC Supreme Court fight allowing it to have power over land use development and not the regional disrict Metro Vancouver.

Mayor Jack Froese says the decision means it is a green light for the proposed University district development around Trinity Western university.

“It has apened the door for us. Our lawyers and of course Metro Vancouver lawyers are looking over the judgement. There is going to be some discussions over the next few weeks I would think. It is something I think that allows that to proceed. I have always said we are not looking at tomrrow or the next year this is a long term plan.”

Froese was asked if the decision radically alters how land use is managed between local governments and regional districts.

“You know I don’t know if it opens new doors. I think it reaffirms what authorities and rights that local governments already have. I think it is refreshing to have a judgement that reconfirms that. Moving forward when it comes to local land use decisions I think we still have to work with regional districts on the over all regional planning.”

Metro Vancouver had contended the development didn’t abide by its Regional Growth Strategy and shouldn’t go ahead.
