Mayor Mike Clay to seek re-election in 2014 municipal election

Port Moody, BC – Mayor Mike Clay formally announced today that he will be running for re-election in the November 15th 2014 Port Moody municipal election.

“Three years ago I made a commitment to the residents of Port Moody to bring a fresh style of leadership to City Hall – an open and inclusive City Hall, where Council and residents work together to keep our community strong, vibrant and engaged”, Clay said.  “At that time, I identified the key issues and priorities that our City was facing, and my approach to dealing with them.   Looking back now, I am proud of the work that Council and I have done and the outcomes we have achieved.”

Clay notes that his primary concern in 2011 was delivering an Official Community Plan (OCP) that allowed the City to move forward, in the new era of the Evergreen Line, while protecting the heritage and character of Moody Centre. Additional priorities identified in 2011 included new partnerships with neighbouring municipalities; improved relationships with senior governments, and providing city services efficiently and effectively.

“With the OCP now completed, including new visions and policies to enhance Port Moody, I’m eager to start working with the community to turn the vision into reality and bring the much anticipated revitalization to our historic core. I have worked hard to develop a new level of cooperation with our Tri-City neighbours which brings opportunities for exciting new joint planning initiatives, such as the recently formed Tri Cities Transportation Committee”, said Clay.  “I am equally pleased to acknowledge that, while delivering increased service levels, and new capital amenities, we have delivered the lowest tax increase (including utilities) since 1999.  Residents are enjoying the new Inlet Centre Fire Hall, Moody Street Overpass and expanded Arts Centre, along with our new open government initiatives such as live web streaming, increased presence on social media, apps and online self-service portals - just a few of the accomplishments I am proud of.”

Clay says he’s pleased that Council recently reviewed the Long Range Strategic Financial Framework report, which is the outcome of nearly three years of extensive work by staff and Council, laying the foundation for the next 50-100 years of financial and infrastructure management for the taxpayers of Port Moody.

“We’ve laid the groundwork with the OCP and the financial plans; now we need to move on to the Zoning Bylaw updates, transportation master plan, parks and recreation master plan and long term capital plans.  New developments need to contribute to the infrastructure needs, while respecting and enhancing our City’s character and Council needs to lead that discussion.  I’ve brought a new level of openness and collaboration to Council and now we need to get to work with the community shaping our future.  These are critical times and I provide the experience, dedication and integrity to lead Port Moody for the next four years.”

Clay was first elected to Council in 2005 and served the community for 6 years before being elected Mayor in 2011. A fourth generation Port Moody native, Clay lives in Moody Centre in a home that his family has owned since the 1930’s and owns and manages a technology consulting business. Clay has been active in the Port Moody community his entire life and organizes and supports many local causes including Crossroads Hospice, the Share Family Services Society and the Terry Fox Run.

“Port Moody is the most beautiful city in the world, and there’s nowhere I would rather live.  I’m proud to serve the residents and continue working to preserve and enhance all we have.
