May 11,2011 Youth Focus


4.1 Youth Week & Get Out UpdateBrent Cote recapped the events of Youth Week. Port Moody hosted the Tri-city Reach Awards which was a huge success. Over 130 people attended and over 65 awards were given out for various youth based community service which included youth, youth mentors and youth friendly businesses of the Tri-cities. TJ's band played an acoustic set as part of the entertainment, with a Port Moody breakdancing troop and a POCO based improve group rounding out the evening along with the awards presentations.

On May 6th Port Moody hosted an "all about youth" night at the recreation complex to expose youth to all of the wonderful things our city recreation services offers. The event included a bbq, a scavenger hunt, full court floor hockey, fear factor challenges, minute-to-win-it challenge, a spa makeover and a pool tournament. Over 40 youth attended and the event was a success from start to finish.

The 2011 Get Out event is set for May 27-29 and Port Moody is sending two staff and 16 youth to participate, up over double from last year's seven participants. Port Moody sits on the planning board with metro parks Vancouver. The event includes two nights of camping, swimming, hiking, high ropes course, and educational aspects which are centered on stewardship.

4.2 ThankYou's

Brent acknowledged all of the hard work that went into Youth Week. Brent thanked Shane for doing a superb job as MC at the Reach Awards, TJ for his amazing performance at the awards, and everyone who helped at the "all about youth" night including Devon, TJ and Sagar.

Shane Virani expressed his thanks to Brent and Corina for all of the hard work and planning that went into the youth week events.

4.3 Rec Dance Volunteers
Brent confirmed Natalie, TJ and Devon as volunteers for the youth dance being held on May 13th at 7PM.

4.4 Summer Schedule at Westhill

Brent confirmed with the committee that the new summer hours for Westhill Youth Center this summer are 3-9PM Monday to Friday. The new hours are hoping to draw more youth and older youth to the program in the evenings and late afternoons.
