1.2 Year End Highlights

Mayor Clay gave a presentation of highlights in the City of Port Moody in 2014.
Mayor Clay spoke about the new Fire Hall No. 1, the Moody Street Overpass Pedestrian walkway improvements, the Rotary Bike Trials Park Rebuild, the Appleyard Centennial House, the Westhill Sports Box, the approval of the nine storey office tower at Suterbrook, the increase in civic engagement and citizen participation initiatives, long range strategic financial plan framework, the Official Community Plan, and the various activities that took place throughout the year, such as the Penguin Plunge, the Arts Festival, Kaboom, the Port Moody Parade, Port Moody Day, Golden Spike Days, PCT Summer Sunday Concert Series, and IOCO Ghost Town Days.
Mayor Clay also invited everyone to come to the Civic Centre to see the CP Holiday Train on December 18, 2014.
Mayor Clay then went on to thank out-going Councillors Nuttall, Elliott, and Small for their work, noting that they will be missed on Council.
Mayor Clay then expressed his thanks for various City staff, and especially recognized Bill Blackwood, who celebrated his 35th anniversary with the City in 2014, and Karen Gray, Deanne Haddon, and Joanne Roemer for saving the life of a Recreation Centre patron who suffered a heart attack.
Mayor Clay wished everyone a Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a very happy new year.

Sandy Burpee, Chair of the Mobile Command Centre Fundraising Committee for Coquitlam Search and Rescue Society, gave a presentation to Council on the role of Coquitlam Search and Rescue (SAR) and spoke about a recent rescue near Sasamat Lake. The Coquitlam SAR was called by the Port Moody Police to search for two special needs women who were lost during a day program outing. A total of 752 volunteer hours were used to conduct the search. The rescue was successfully completed with no cost to the Port Moody Police Department, which is the body responsible for local ground search and rescue. Mr. Burpee then presented information on the need to replace the Mobile Command Centre, which has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced as well as updated to meet the needs of rescues now performed and to accommodate modern equipment. Mr. Burpee presented the proposed Command Centre Replacement, which has an estimated cost of $407,000, and requested a $10,000 contribution from the City of Port Moody. Mr. Burpee answered questions from Council on the funding model for the replacement Mobile Command Centre, sources of operational funding, and general information about the organization. Council thanked Mr. Burpee for his presentation and requested that the financial plan be submitted for consideration by Council.

3.2 Delegation – Ugly Christmas Sweater Day

Jordan Birch, Now That’s Ugly Society, gave a presentation to Council on the society’s recent fundraising efforts, noting that the society raised $20K in the previous year and granted two wishes through the Children’s Wish Foundation. Mr. Birch requested that Council proclaim December City of Port Moody Regular Council Meeting - December 9, 2014 4 19, 2014 Ugly Christmas Sweater Day and urged Port Moody residents to take part by buying a button and wearing an ugly Christmas sweater in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation. Mr. Birch noted that the fundraising goal for November and December 2014 is $100,000. Mr. Birch then distributed ugly Christmas sweaters to members of Council for a group photo.

Mike Smith, School Programs Manager for HASTEeBC, introduced his organization and its goal of connecting communities through walking and cycling to school. HASTeBC is currently working with eight middle schools in School District 43 on school travel planning. Mr. Smith explains that road infrastructure, health, and children and youth mobility and independence are issues that can be addressed through facilitating walking, cycling, or scooting. HASTeBC works with schools and municipalities in separate committees to determine ways to best facilitate active school travel. Council requested that Mr. Smith get in touch with the City Transportation Engineering Technologist to arrange for a presentation to the Transportation Committee.

AND THAT the City request that Onni Group participate with the City in the review of the compensation plans, and that as part of the review Onni Group seek input from the City’s Environmental Protection Committee and stream stewardship groups;
