Verbal Report: Mayor Clay / File: 18-7705-01

 
Mayor Clay called the meeting to order at 7:01pm and introduced the evening's Art at Council, a reproduction of a pencil sketch titled Beaumont: May 9, 1917, created by Rudolf Koch. Mayor Clay invited Jim Millar, Executive Director of the Port Moody Station Museum, to speak about the piece.
Mr. Millar noted that the sketch, part of an upcoming exhibition at the Museum, was created in 1917 by Rudolf Koch, a World War I soldier from Germany, and illustrates the mundane experience of a soldier. Mr. Millar noted that the exhibition at the Museum opens on January 14, 2018 at 2:00pm.


2 Public Input

Marina Coertze, Port Moody, expressed profound sadness at the death of the beaver at Klahanie, and explained the importance of the beaver family to the Klahanie community and requested that more information about the incident be provided.
Xylia Glumac, Port Moody, expressed sadness about the death of the beaver at Klahanie and requested more information about the City's plans to help the remaining members of the beaver family.
Jim Atkinson, Port Moody, expressed concerns about actions that led to the death of the beaver at Klahanie, noting that more should have been done to prevent the tragedy and that the handling of the incident erodes public trust.
Peter Dasnieres, Port Moody, asked for a status update on his request for residents-only parking adjacent to the Bold townhouse development.
Barry Sharbo, Port Moody, noted that the minutes of the Public Hearing held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 should be amended to indicate Port Moody as his city of residence and to indicate that his concerns were regarding an "area" rather than "streets".

Michelle Eldred, Port Moody, expressed concerns about actions that led to the death of a beaver at Klahanie and asked the City to conduct a thorough review of the incident.

11.1 Council Verbal Reports
Mayor Clay noted that this is the last Council meeting for Ron Higo as the General Manager of Community Services before retirement. Mayor Clay thanked Mr. Higo on behalf of Council and wished him the best in his retirement.

Councillor Lahti wished Mr. Higo the best in his retirement and noted that she will be bringing forward a report at the next Regular Council meeting with the following recommendation:
THAT staff be directed to develop a beaver management plan that outlines best management practices and implement strategies for coexistence as an alternative to extermination and/or relocation whenever possible.

Councillor Dilworth expressed appreciation for staff who worked over the holidays, including Library staff who worked on the Library's renovation and Fire-Rescue staff who raised donation funds through the Christmas Tree Chipping event.

Councillor Royer acknowledged residents who spoke about the beaver family and wished Mr. Higo the best in his retirement.

13. Public Input
Dawn Donily, Port Moody, expressed appreciation for Councillor Lahti's notice of motion. Ms. Donily noted that she had sent a picture of the beaver to Council and requested that the picture be displayed to commemorate the kit.
Marina Coertze, Port Moody, requested more information on the condition of the remaining beaver family members.

Mayor Clay adjourned the meeting at 7:34pm.
