NEWS RELEASE Nov. 29, 2006

DISTRICT TO START CONSULTATIONS ON SCHOOL CLOSURES

At a special board meeting held November 28, 2006 the Board of School Trustees for School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) approved a motion directing staff to initiate a process of consultation with parents and stakeholders to consider the closure of eight elementary schools due to declining enrolment.

The eight elementary schools being considered for closure by June 30, 2007 are:

• College Park

• Coronation Park

• Lincoln

• Meadowbrook

• Millside

• Moody

• Mountain View

• Vanier

School District 43 has been experiencing significant declining enrolment for the past six years and that trend is projected to continue. Since 2001, the district’s enrolment has declined by 2,500 students – 1,600 of them in elementary schools.

“The district is faced with some difficult decisions in the face of continued declining enrolment and under-utilization of some elementary schools,” said Board Chair, Melissa Hyndes. “However, the board is committed to channeling resources to provide increased service to students rather than on buildings”.

The district will consult with parents and stakeholder groups in January and February at the respective schools to give information and to provide opportunities for input and feedback.

The Board of School Trustees is expected to make a decision on the proposed school closures at the February 27, 2007 board meeting.
